A 5 minute recipe for a healthy and delicious spinach blueberry smoothie packed with superfood ingredients that is toddler approved!
It took me 5 minutes to make this spinach blueberry smoothie, 10 minutes to take photos of it and 2 minutes to drink it. And then I spent close to an hour stuck on writing this post and trying to figure out how to sell you on this epic spinach blueberry smoothie.
Do I list the health benefits of the powerhouse ingredients? Do I tell you that you won't even notice there is spinach in it? (You won't) Or do I go for the obvious quick, easy and nutritious breakfast/snack angle. And then I realised that I could write one sentence and you would be running for the blender faster than you can say green smoothie.
My one year old will drink this.
The end.
But actually. So if you like the idea of green smoothies for your kids (or for you) but the thought of an actual green coloured drink doesn't appeal, let's talk.

I've been giving Sadie green smoothies since she first started eating. I love them, they are a quick and easy snack but mostly because spinach is such a superfood that I will try anything to get it into her. Not because she's bad at eating vegetables, but because spinach is a tricky one. Sadie will eat florets of broccoli and cauliflower, can pick up peas and carrots and will try almost anything else I give her, but spinach is one of those foods that is pretty hard to eat as is. So I put it in her scrambled eggs, sneak it into macaroni cheese and bolognese and of course, add it to any smoothie I make for her.
So because of this, smoothies that are actually green are normal to her. But if you are just starting out and you think your kiddos will turn up their nose at a green drink, give this one a go. The blueberries make the smoothie a gorgeous purple colour and the banana makes it nice and sweet. If you think it needs it, you could also add a little maple syrup or honey.
Green Smoothie Tip
Blend the spinach (or other greens) with the milk for a minute or two first, before adding other ingredients. This ensures that the spinach gets blended up really well and you don't end up with big bits of spinach in your smoothie.
I have to admit, out of all the smoothies I make this one isn't my favourite but Sadie absolutely powered through hers so I figured, it may not be my pick (I prefer the tropical flavours of this green smoothie) but if the 1 year old loves it, it's worth sharing!
And even though I'm sure you are already looking to see if you have what you need to make it, let me tell you anyway - this spinach blueberry smoothie is packed full of powerhouse ingredients that any parent would be happy to get into their kids. Use fresh blueberries if they are in season, but if not frozen work just as well - they are what I used.
Superstar ingredients:
Spinach - full of iron, vitamin K, vitamin A, vitamin C and folate as well as being a good source of manganese, magnesium, iron and vitamin B2
Blueberries - full of antioxidants, manganese, vitamin K and vitamin C.
Chia seeds - an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, rich in antioxidants, and they provide fiber, iron, and calcium
Plus there is frozen banana to make it extra thick and creamy, cinnamon & your milk of choice. And if you want it to be extra filling, you can also add a couple of tablespoons of rolled oats or a scoop of Greek yoghurt for extra protein.
