These 3 sugar scrubs make a wonderful homemade gift idea - and you can choose between peppermint, coffee or lavender and rosemary! They take 5 minutes to make, from ingredients you probably already have!

Jars of homemade sugar scrubs - coffee, peppermint and lavender

A few years ago I made my first ever homemade body scrub and I was converted. I'm not one for spa treatments, bath salts (we don't actually have a bath!) but a little body scrub every now and then makes me feel pretty fancy!

But of course if you know me, you'll know that if I can make it myself, there is no way I'll spend $15 on a little packet of scrub. And seriously, once you see how easy it is to make these (and using ingredients you already have at home!) you won't buy them again either!

The base for a homemade sugar scrub is so simple - 1 cup sugar and 2 Tablespoons of oil. I use melted coconut oil but olive oil or any neutral oil such as avocado oil would work too.

There are only a couple of other ingredients for each recipe:

Peppermint - a few drops of peppermint essential oil or extract/essence and if you want to make a layered candy cane effect, add a few drops of red food colouring to half of the scrub. Don't panic about coming out of the shower coloured red - I have tested this and it doesn't stain!

Coffee - I use half the sugar and add ½ cup of ground coffee. I just use plunger/filter grind straight from the packet. I always have it on hand and it makes a super invigorating scrub! I also add vanilla and cinnamon to make it smell extra delicious but this is optional.

Coffee sugar scrub in a glass bowl with coffee beans and cinnamon sticks on a white background

Rosemary & lavender - A few drops of lavender essential oil and I also like finely chopping up fresh lavender flowers and rosemary to stir through - I love the look of this and it makes it smell amazing!

Then just pour each scrub into a jar, stick or tie the label on (download them here) and they are the perfect gift for someone or just to keep for yourself!

Each recipe makes about 1 cup of scrub which fits perfectly into a 250ml jar. You can buy jars of this size in just about any shape but I like using the Barker's jars - they are a great shape and have a pretty pattern on the lid already. Plus it's a great way to recycle the jar from our favourite fruit chutney!

    Ingredients

    Peppermint

    • 1 cup white sugar
    • 2 Tablespoons oil (I used melted coconut oil, but olive oil or avocado oil would work too)
    • 6-10 drops peppermint essential oil (If you don't have essential oil, you can use peppermint essence or extract instead)
    • 2-4 drops red food colouring (optional)

    Coffee

    • ½ cup ground coffee (I use plunger/filter grind straight out of the bag)
    • ½ cup white sugar
    • 2 Tablespoons oil (I used melted coconut oil, but olive oil or avocado oil would work too)
    • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

    Lavender & Rosemary

    • 1 cup white sugar
    • 2 Tablespoons oil (I used melted coconut oil, but olive oil or avocado oil would work too)
    • 6-10 drops lavender essential oil
    • Fresh rosemary & lavender (finely chopped)

    Instructions

    For all scrubs

    • Add all ingredients to a small bowl and mix together well. Store in a covered jar.

    To layer the peppermint scrub

    • To create the layered effect, split the scrub into two bowls and add the red food colouring to one bowl and mix together well. Spoon layers of the red and white scrub into the jar you are using.
