Homemade hot fudge sauce - the perfect thing to feed your ice-cream addiction, even in the middle of winter! Made from ingredients you have in your pantry!
Before we start talking about how 100% obsessed I am with a certain homemade hot fudge sauce at the moment, let's take a moment to reflect on something else amazing that has happened.
A NEW HARRY POTTER BOOK!! Yep, the inner Harry Potter geek in me has finally surfaced for you guys all to see. When my mum brought the book in to work for me last week (yes, my mum is the best) I was so super excited that I couldn't even bear it. It's been 9 whole years since the last book! And I really like it. The second I opened it and started reading I instantly felt the need to go back and re-read the entire series, for like, the 100th time. I think I might. There are also feelings that I might get some kitchen inspiration along the lines of Butterbeer this weekend...you with me?
Anyway, while I'm busy reading, I'm also busy eating ice-cream covered in homemade hot fudge sauce. Because we know that a true ice cream lover doesn't let winter get in the way of the addiction. We find ways and if that involves making piping hot super chocolatey fudgy sauce to pour all over that delicious ice-cream, then that it what we do.
And it's good. So good.
I wanted to create a sauce that had simple ingredients that you ALWAYS have on hand. And I think I nailed it. Cocoa powder, brown sugar, milk, butter, vanilla & salt. So simple! No need to have chocolate or cream on stand-by, just regular old pantry staples...although using cream instead of milk would be an epic change out.
This homemade hot fudge sauce is chocolately, decadent and so easy to make. Throw all the ingredients into a pot, bring to the boil and pour all over ice-cream. You can just make enough to eat right away, or make a big batch and store it in the fridge, ready to re-heat at a moments notice.
It's perfect for ice-cream nights on cold winter days! Covered in sprinkles...obviously! Also, it doubles as awesome chocolate milkshake syrup and goes really well just mixed into a glass of milk for a quick chocolate milk fix. 🙂

So sorry, but I didn't like the bitterness of the large amount of cocoa. I added more sugar, more milk, more butter and a few blocks of Whittakers Milk Chocolate (but that kind of defeats the purpose) to tone it all down, and then it was delish, thanks

This is the second recipe of yours I have tried now. So yummy, added warm on top of slices of chocolate cake and cream for family dessert. Everyone loved it. Thanks so much. Highly recommend this one, so decadent.
Carolyn says
A very nice chocolate sauce - but this is NOT hot fudge. Tasty, but disappointing as it was thin as can be 😞
Laura says
Hi Carolyn, it thickens up a lot on cooling - if you prefer it thicker, you can use cream in place of milk or just reduce the volume of milk used
Alison says
Oh my goodness, this sauce is so delicious! It's a huge hit with the whole family, and so quick and easy to make. Thanks Laura!
Deb says
Hello Laura, I just made this sauce for an ice cream cake that I am making for my
sisters birthday. It is delicious! I am wondering if you packed your brown sugar or if
you measured one cup without packing it? Thank you!
Laura says
Hi Deb, I just loosely fill the cup, this recipe is very forgiving so it won't matter if it's packed or not!
Kere says
Wow this looks really good I'm going to have to try it
Chrisanna King says
Hello Laura. This sauce sounds delicious and I am definitely going to make it. How long will it keep in the fridge for?
Many thanks.
Chrisanna
Laura says
Hi Chrisanna, it will keep in the fridge for about 1 month. Laura

This looks amazing. A little winter chilliness could never hold me back from ice cream. And this comes at a perfect time because the other day I poured the chocolate sauce we had in our pantry all over my ice cream and then I discovered it had gone bad and I had ruined a whole bowl of ice cream!!!
Laura says
Ohhhh no that's the worst!!! Make a batch of this and you'll never ruin ice cream again! 🙂
Claire @ My Pink & Green Life says
Yummmm. I love hot fudge sauce but I hate the store-bought kind because it's got all sorts of icky additives in it! This looks so simple and rich and perfect! You're giving me ice cream cravings with that sundae picture. 😛
Laura says
That's why I like the homemade version! All good things in it 🙂
