At any given time we have 1 or more pigs in the paddock (except right now as we have 3 in our freezer!) Pigs were our first go at raising our own meat and we have clearly become addicted as we have just "graduated" numbers 3 & 4 - note the "no-name policy" we have for our meat animals! They are easy to take care of and grow from our scraps - nothing goes to waste!
We have been questioned about how we can eat the animals that we spend so much time taking care of. The answer to that is easy. We love eating pork and bacon but we don't love the fact that pigs in NZ can be raised in less than ideal conditions. If we are going to eat pork we want to know that it has lived the best life it can. Our pigs can run around the paddock, eat grass, they have warm beds, shelter and access to water all the time. They are also treated to lots of back scratches! In other words, they are allowed to just be pigs. And we are happy with that!
